Abhyangam (Oil Massage)
Abhyangam is a popular body massage in Ayurveda. The word abhyanga itself means to massage. In Ayurveda, the Abhyangam massage has become popular because of its effective way of conditioning the body. Abhyangam can be used therapeutically. The massage is designed around each individual, to suit his or her disease or condition. An Ayurveda physician can assess this and will then decide on the appropriate oils and the exact way of massage. Abhyangam can increase the production of white blood corpuscles and antibodies, which provide more resistance against viruses and diseases. This helps the defense mechanism in the body and increases immunity towards environmental changes. In this way abhyangam massage is a protector, preserver and a rejuvenator, increasing self-confidence and will power. To massage is to exercise the nervous system.
Pizhichil

‘Pizhichil’ literally means ‘squeezing’. Pizhichil treatment is also called Sarvangdhara Treatment. Here, warm medicated oil is squeezed over the patient’s body from a piece of cloth that is periodically dipped in a vessel containing the oil. In Sarvangadhara, oil is poured over the patient’s body from pitchers. Pizhichil requires a lesser quantity of oil when compared to Sarvangadhara. Before beginning Pizhichil, a suitable type of oil should be applied to the head and body of the patient. In some cases, a talam is also applied on the head and bandaged with leaves. The masseur usually begin by squeezing oil on to the shoulders and then down the hands of the patient who sits in an upright position. Each masseur uses on hand to pour the oil while massaging with the other. The continuous flow of warm oil over the body influences the health of the srotas (channels) -- the channels of prana, digestion and elimination, and the functioning of the mind. There is no wonder why Pizhichil is regarded as the ultimate treatment to renew vibrant health and happiness.
Udvarthanam(Powder massage)
This is a specialized herbal treatment for weight reduction. An herbal powder is applied all over the body and deeply massaged with specific movements by two therapists for one hour. Udwarthanam is the procedure in which the body is massaged well with specially prepared slightly heated powder. The medicated powder is massaged thoroughly in prathiloma direction (that is in the direction opposite to the normal procedure of massaging- from top to bottom) ie. from bottom to top. Udwarthanam is also done in seven postures like other swedana procedures. Udwarthanam is very much effective in Athisthoulya(Obesity), Srothorodhas(closures/constriction of the vital body channels), Oedema due to improper blood supply (Hypothyroidism & Anaemia). By Udwarthanam the unwanted fat of the body is removed, proper blood supply is achieved to the body. Udwarthanam softens and exfoliates the skin, improves muscle tone, and is a favored treatment for those with sensitive skin. In addition, Udwarthanam improves blood circulation and eases joint pains, and is also known to be effective against certain skin diseases.
Naranga Kizhi

Naranga kizhi is a method of therapeutic sweating. In this procedure lime poultice are used to give fomentation and massage all over the body or any specific part. Limes are made into small pieces and then processed with various medicines like Shatapuspa, Garlic etc. These are covered in cloth pieces in the form of boluses and are made hot frequently throughout the procedure. The person is made to sit on the droni (special table for massage) and first applied medicated oil all over the body. Fomentation and simultaneous massage is given in all seven positions (refer Abhyangam). Person is given hot water bath after the procedure.
Panchakarma (Body Purification Therapy)
Panchakarma is based on the central concept of Ayurveda that disease is caused by the build-up of toxins which causes an imbalance in three doshas in the mind - body complex. Panchakarma is the cornerstone to Ayurvedic Management of disease. Pancha Karma is the process, which gets to the root cause of the problem and re-establishes the essential balance of 'Tridosha' (three doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha) in body. Pancha Karma is not only good for alleviating disease but is also a useful tool in maintaining excellent health. Ayurveda advises undergoing Pancha karma at the seasonal changes in order to clean the body and improve the digestion and metabolic processes.
Panchakarma - Ayurvedic Complete Detoxification and Cleansing Programme Panchakarma is Ayurveda's primary purification and detoxification treatment. Panchakarma is derived from two words i.e. PANCH meaning five and KARMA meaning steps (cleansing procedures). These five procedures of eliminating toxins from the body are Vamana, Virechana, Nasya, Basti and Raktamokshana. This series of five procedure helps remove deep rooted toxins from the body thereby balancing the doshas (energies that govern all biological functions). According to Ayurvedic medicine, a person's natural state is one of health, happiness, and inner well-being. This means that the body is free of toxins; organs function normally; the mind is at peace and emotions are balanced and positive. Unfortunately, with the pressures of daily life over time, toxins build up in the body causing both physical and mental ailments. Panchakarma can reverse these negative effects and restore a natural state of health and wellness by cleansing the body of toxins, restoring balance to the system, and improving bodily function.
Vamanam (Emesis)
The kapha toxins accumulated in the body and the respiratory tract are effectively removed by Vamana, one of the five therapies of Panchakarma in Ayurveda. Vamana is therapeutic vomiting, which is a medicated emesis therapy. People with high imbalance of kapha are given this type of treatment, which loosens and mobilizes the toxins, in an effort to eliminate them from the body. Waste products (vitiated dosha) are eliminated through the upper gastrointestinal tract. The vitiated kapha are eliminated through the mouth. After vomiting, the sinus is cleared, which in turn provides relief from congestion, wheezing and breathlessness. Know more about Vamana therapy by going through the following lines.
Virechanam (purgation)
’Virechanam’ therapy is defined as the medicated purgation therapy, which cleanses the Pitta and purifies blood, by clearing the toxins from the body. The treatment concentrates on the toxins that are accumulated in the liver and gall bladder. The gastro-intestinal tract is also cleansed by Virachana therapy. This treatment is usually administered for three days after Vamana treatment, but its duration may vary from case to case. In fact, Virechana can be administered directly after purvakarma, without undergoing the Vamana therapy that precedes Virechana. When the digestive tract is clean and toxic-free, it benefits the entire body system. As a result, the person's appetite increases, body strength enhances and the person becomes active and buoyant. Thus virechanam also functions as an excellent rejuvenative procedure
Nasyam (Nasal medication)
Nasya therapy is a process wherein the drug (herbalized oils and liquid medicines) is administered through the nostrils. Since nose is the gateway of the head, the therapy is highly effective in curing a number of diseases pertaining to the head, if it is performed systematically. The therapy cleanses and opens the channels of the head, thereby improving the process of oxygenation (prana), which has a direct influence on the functioning of brain. The therapy is beneficial if done on a regular basis, because it keeps the eyes, nose and ear healthy. It also prevents the early graying of hair and bear. Read on to know more about Nasa karma, a therapy of Panchakarma.
Raktha mokshanam (blood letting)
Raktamokshana is considered one among Shodhana procedures. Raktamokshana means letting of blood which is mainly indicated in certain disease state especially when there is Raktadushti and also during physiologic function. The term ‘Raktamokshana’ comprises of two words, ie., ‘Rakta’ & ‘Mokshana’.
Podikizhi
Podhikizhi belong to a group of Ayurvedic treatments of high repute called Sweda. This is a type of Swedana Chikitsa (fomentation) wherein medicated powders are made into poultice and used for giving fomentation. Drugs like vacha, sarshapam, jatamamsi, methika, shatapushpa, kushtam etc. are made into fine powder, fried and tied in cloth pieces in the form of boluses. These are made hot frequently throughout the procedure. The person is made to sit on the droni(special table for massage). He is then given fomentation with simultaneous massage using this poultice. Application of medicated oil prior to fomentation is not mandatory here. Person is given hot water bath after the procedure.
